A Friend Request. What does it entail? Friendship, close acquaintance, or a total stranger wanting to claim another picture to their social media list of so claimed friends? Is it just another pixelated image our screen has conjured from a creation made to allow people to connect easily?

The ability to connect easily is an amazing concept but it doesn’t allow for the innate human need to connect deeply like a conversation in person does. To be able to stare them in the eyes as they tell touching stories of their childhood or feel their passion as they express their interests in wonders that may have never crossed our mind. To have the opportunity to feel the energy created between them and us while sharing experiences and tales about life with empathy, envy, and curiosity. Hearing the change of tone as they move from joyous memories of their foreign trips to heartbreaking experiences with first love.
These things are hard to feel through a screen that folds thousands of kilometres like paper air, disallowing the ability to embrace one another at times of great need. We stare at each other through the intelligently lit screen without realizing, we are actually just gazing at a machine who has done a pleasant job at hiding the fact we have allowed it to distance human touch; recreating the voice we long to hear in a way which makes us crave more of, to be in the presence of the person whose voice we’ve been deceivingly hearing.
