Why Some Memories Are Best Written

The day my family and I had taken some close relatives to visit a beautiful historical site, I had written up a poem relating to the image above. Read on to find out why I had done so.

The history of the place isn’t as appealing to the ear as the eye. It is a convict prison that jailed the worst criminals during the mid-1800s until it was abandoned in 1877. If you are brave enough why not take on the ghost tours that are held at night – I dare you.

The poem detailed what I had initially felt earlier when sitting atop a hill overlooking most of the site, as I observed and scouted for opportunities to capture a memorable shot, a female tourist strolled into a perfect frame. I took the photo. Multiple ones, as all photographers alike, do.

Don’t let something precious slip away without noticing it, because if you miss it, it will pass on by like the wind – you feel it, but you can’t see it.

It was during my review of the images I had just taken. The thought crossed my mind – Why was she alone? Is she with someone? And What kind of story is hidden away?
These thoughts crossed my mind again when I sat down and slowly ate my lunch; I browsed through the photos I had taken that morning. It hit me. I had the sudden urge to put words to the questions, and I did just that.
Being me, who enjoys beautifying silly things decided to jot it down into my notebook, trying to bring out my first emotions and perception of the fleeting moment.
I began writing out whatever words came to mind.
At first, I was writing out what I was doing like I was writing a movie scene, scribbling so much gibberish it was not what I hoped for. Realizing that my attempts to wordplay with what my mind was thinking, into a way that I found to be artistic were more difficult than expected. But this is what I found amusing.
I danced with whatever words I could to best describe the experience in a way that it portrays the feelings felt. I’m sure some of you would know what I mean.

Regardless, after battling with what words to use to bring out the moment as accurately as my vocabulary allowed, I was able to slowly articulate a precise memory of mine which I found to be too beautiful just to let pass.
It may not be as beautiful when in words, but emotions are tough to put into words.

Conclusion

Writing down a specific memory or action, allows you to focus more on details which you had not realized. This enhanced self-awareness will enrich the experiences you encounter throughout your days and with those you treasure. So play with words and see how you describe the events that occur to and around you.

The photo above was captured at Port Arthur, Tasmania in the summer of 2016.
